Inline Speed Skating National Championships
by Lisa Meyer
Indoor: July 5, 2007, Sandy Hill Arena
Individual races ranging from 300m to 3,000m plus relays were skated. The biggest challenge was wheel selection, as the surface was slick. Stephane, Allain, Dominique (and Mike and Benoit) certainly managed to choose the correct wheels, easily holding their ground. Dominique took the Senior Ladies title, beating out the 2006 titleholder. Stephane and Allain took gold and silver respectively in Senior Men. In Masters Men Benoit took gold and Mike silver. Bailin took the gold in Elementary Girls. Hugh took gold in Juvenile Boys. Lisa took the gold in Grand Master Ladies. Quite the sweep for OISC despite the fact we donąt train indoors.
In the relays, Bailin and Hugh took gold in the Two Mixed Elementary relay. Lisa, together with Annette Hollman of Montreal and Marianne Dyck from Calgary took gold in the Three Women Senior relay. Bailin, together with Paisely Perrie and Avery Reeves (both from Harriston) took gold in the Three Women Elementary relay. Hugh, together with Francois Xavier-Berac (VRL Montreal) took bronze in the Two Men Elementary relay. Hugh, together with Francois and Josh Scott and Derek Beyer of Harriston, took gold in the Four Men Elementary relay.
Outdoor: July 7, 2007, Carleton University (races on Sunday July 8 were cancelled due to rain)
Senior World Class Men (Sergio, JF, Stephane, Allain and Mathieu LeBlanc) and Senior World Class Women (Annick, Pascale and Dominique) skated a 300m time trial, and 1,000m, 10,000m, and 20,000m races. Annick got the bronze in the sprints. Dominique hung on to the lead pack in the distance races to finish 4th. Pascale finished 5th. JF took the gold in the sprint category. In the distance category Sergio took silver and Stephane took bronze. They were beaten only by Peter Doucet who is representing Canada at the Pan Am Games. Sergio qualified to skate in the World Championships. Allain had an unfortunate crash in his 10,000m race, breaking his wrist.
Primary Boys (Hugh) and Juvenile Girls (Bailin) skated a 300m time trial, a 500m race and a 1,000m / 1,500m race. Hugh took gold and broke all his own Canadian records, despite the slow track. Bailin took silver.
Intermediate Men (Andrew), Masters Men (Benoit and Mike) and Grand Masters Ladies (Lisa) skated a 300m time trial and a 5,000m race. Andrew took silver for both his races. Benoit took bronze for his both races, with Mike right behind him. Lisa got a silver in the 300m and gold in the 5,000m race (breaking the Canadian record).
