On a Roll!
April 9, 2006

Dear Inga,

On April 18, the season will get underway with our first club training "Chalk Talk" (see below). Now in our 6th year, we are poised to set the pace for skaters everywhere. For instance, Ottawa is host to two of the best inline events:

  • ING Ottawa Marathon on May 28
  • Ottawa Inline Skating Festival (organized by OISC) on Sept. 3

  • We also wow skaters with:
  • Barry Publow, our renowned head coach
  • a well thought out training schedule
  • social and recreational activities ... and more!

  • Improved web site

In a few days, we expect to launch our brand new web site with numerous cool features, like mileage club, an online store, members only area, plus all the usual info and news on skating. When this happens On a Roll will be redesigned. Please note: some of the links from this issue may not work properly after the switch over.

Chalk talk: preparing for Ottawa marathon

On April 18, at 6:30 pm at the Canadian Police College (St. Laurent and Sandridge) we're holding the ING Ottawa Marathon Preparation Chalk Talk.

This event kicks off the first series of training sessions aimed at preparing you for the May 28 marathon or half marathon.

    New youth program

With the excitement among the young participants at our Inline Skating Festival last year, we are trying something new for the club: teaching inline speed skating techique to youth aged 9 to 13. This program takes place on Sundays from 9 am to 10 am during NCC/Alcatel Sunday Bikedays.

Register early to secure a spot.

Early season technique tips by Barry Publow
    Barry teaches

Inline skating is all about body position, balance and timing. Efficient skating cannot exist without proficiency in each of these areas, with balance being the core ability.

Here are a few tips to help you find your balance again as you get out on your skates for the first few times this year.

Do you eat with performance in mind? by Beth Mansfield

Before you start training to improve your health and sport performance you need to assess your strengths and weaknesses, your current state of fitness and set some health and performance goals. Nutrition is no different.

Get started with this brief questionnaire to assess your habits.

    Alcatel Sunday Bikedays

Every Sunday from June 4 to August 27, 2006 we are offering basic skills workshops on Colonel By Drive. Facilitated by OISC instructors, these workshops are geared to new skaters who want to learn about safety, equipment, and try out basic techniques including classic stride, turning and braking.
