Dear Inga,

Register online and you could win 1 of 5 prizes every day until August 26! That's right: 8 more chances to win your share of 40 more prizes including brand new skates, courtesy of the Ottawa Inline Skating Festival and K2 Skates.

This issue of On a Roll has several articles on preparing for your skating events. Hope these are helpful as you prepare for the fall inline season, from New York to Duluth from Winnipeg to Berlin, and especially our own Ottawa Inline Skating Festival.

On a Roll subscriber Eleanor Bouliane is the winner of a brand new pair of K2 Skates.

Dan Caron and Guy Massicotte - August 24
slalom

On Thursday August 24th Dan Caron and Guy Massicotte will present a Slalom and Trick Inline Workshop. This workshop will be offered on top of the regular club’s programming at NRC and is strictly optional for members. During the workshop Dan and Guy will lead the group through different skating tricks around cones. The shorter the skates (4 wheels / no brakes) the better. Attendees are also encouraged to wear knee, hand and elbow protection.

Remember, anyone who registers by August 26 will get their free Festival T-shirt or optional upgrade. After August 26, they are not included in your registration.

    Parking Update
Parking at Carleton University is confirmed. Please park at P7, accessible from Bronson Street.

    Race course update
We've made course improvements by using more of Colonel By going towards Hog's Back for the 10 km event, as well as the 21 and 42. The water station will be south of Pretoria Bridge. This allows us to move start times back by 5 minutes for the marathon (new start time: 2:15) and the half marathon (new: 4:10).

    More volunteers, please

Tune your skates by Gavin Thulien and Carl Britney

Whether you're a speed skater preping for races, a fitness skater, hockey player, or commuter, a few minutes spent maintaining your skates will increase performance and fun. There are two other reasons for tuning: safety and costs.

    Commitment by Dominique Larocque

    PhilosoFIT

Bridging the gap between learning skills and practice time is critical if one is to succeed in sport (and life). What makes some individuals able to commit to perfecting their skills through practice is often a mystery. What is important to remember is that it is possible for any individual to commit - but it may require a shift in consciousness. Like Einstein said: "We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking we used when we created them."
